About MitoCanada (www.mitocanada.org)
The MitoCanada Foundation is Canada’s only not-for-profit organization focused on mitochondrial disease. MitoCanada was formed in 2010 by a group of passionate Canadians parents whose previously happy, healthy children were given a diagnosis of mitochondrial disease. Not willing to be victims of such overwhelming twists of fate, these individuals set out to find solutions by providing knowledge and support to improve quality of life while raising awareness and advancing Canadian research activities.
What are mitochondria?
Mitochondria are mighty, microscopic, energy-producing structures that live within almost every cell in our bodies and create more than 90% of the energy needed to sustain life and support organ function. They’re like tiny factories in each of our cells that turn the food we eat and the oxygen we breathe into ATP energy – our body’s major energy source.
What is mitochondrial disease?
Mitochondrial disease is a genetic disease that affects 1 in 4,000 people by negatively impacting the energy production in our cells and ultimately compromising the body’s energy intensive organs such as brain, muscles, digestive tract, liver and kidneys.
